On the Road: Tennessee Travels
October 25th, 2009
This week I had the opportunity to visit with friends in Anderson County and attend the Oak Ridge vs Clinton football game. Before a close game, it was great to hear the opinions of concerned Tennesseans. So often I hear the same worries: a lack of good jobs being created in the economy, the disturbing growth of the federal government and concerns about the health care bills making their way through Congress. Everyone agrees we need reform to bring down costs and increase access. But very few agree with the way the liberal leadership in Congress is going about it.
It was a great honor to join the delegates to the bi-annual convention of the Tennessee Federation of Republican Women in Chattanooga this weekend. It’s been a long standing saying that Republican women are the backbone of the party, and it’s grounded in truth. Republican women do the hard work in campaigns. During my twenty years in public involvement, so many good friends have come from standing together to support the conservative cause.
Saturday morning I was pleased to join Craig and Dawn Sheaffer for the reopening of Montlake Classic Clays shooting range. For 37 years, Montlake has been an institution in Hamilton County as the only public range for skeet and trap shooting. In 2008, an overreaching government closed Montlake and the Sheaffers were thrown into a legal and government battle for eleven months to reopen their business. This week the Sheaffers were able to open for the first time since the government forced them to close. I was proud to join my friend Tony Sanders of Tony Sanders Outdoors who helped lead the fight for Montlake and celebrate the right to earn a living as well as our Second Amendment rights.
