On the Road: A Tennessee Place in History
August 18th, 2009

August18, 1920, 89 years ago, suffragists in Tennessee won a victory that set into motion the right to vote for American women.  Thirty-six states were required to pass the 19th Amendment.  Tennessee’s Legislature, after several weeks of drama, including red roses worn by anti-suffragists and yellow roses worn by pro-suffragists, witnessed a young Republican legislator from Niota, Tennessee, Harry Burns, cast the vote that sent the 19th Amendment to Tennessee’s Governor’s desk for signing on August 24, 1920 and the law being implemented nationally on August 26.

I was honored to join the Tennessee Valley Republican Women to celebrate this 89th anniversary and discuss issues.  The same passion that was stirring in 1920 about the right to vote for women was evident in these women who are disgusted with the direction of our government under the direction of President Obama, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.  All are in agreement that a true fight lies ahead, but it’s one worth waging to put America’s priorities of our Constitution and the freedoms of individuals above the bureaucracy and power of the government.

Many thanks to the Tennessee Valley Women for inviting me and the many sentiments of encouragement. Your help will be critical to helping me win and holding this seat in 2010.
