Issues: Goverment Spending So Fast You Can't Keep Up
August 9th, 2009
Any candidate for office always finds themselves answering the question, “Why are you running?” Sometimes the examples are easy to find.
Just a few days back, I issued a statement against the “$200 million” that was intended to purchase four private jets for the U.S. House of Representatives. Within a matter of hours, that figure has now ballooned to $550 million for eight jets for lawmakers…the very same lawmakers who excoriated corporate leadership who flew to Washington, D.C. in private jets during the hearings on the auto industry. The same bankrupt auto companies that were “too big to fail,” cost the American people billions of dollars, and declared bankruptcy anyway.
While President Obama and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi propose to cut defense spending to pre-9/11 levels, possibly even pre-Vietnam War levels as a percentage of our budget, we have elites in our federal government treating themselves to luxurious travel to avoid commercial transportation and the public.
I would like to invite Speaker Pelosi to respond to her website’s statement: “Our federal budget should be a statement of our national values. One of those values is responsibility… Instead of piling trillions of dollars of debt onto our children and grandchildren…”
I am determined to continue the decades-long stance against reckless actions such as these. Those of us who exercise our First Amendment right to stand in opposition to hypocritical policies may find ourselves labeled among the “mob”, the “TeaPartiers”, “the right-wing whackos”, and other terms of derision by our national “leadership” but I promise to continue to work diligently for fiscal responsibility… something Nancy Pelosi only posts on a website.
