On the Road: Keeping Tabs
July 27th, 2009

It’s been a busy few days for the campaign. Team Robin Smith signed up for the “Mater Wars” at the Grainger County Tomato Festival on Saturday. I’m proud to say we won the first round on behalf of our important charity, Special Olympics. After the wars, I was glad that red is our campaign color or that would have been a real mess on the T-shirts. Ducking, advancing and returning fire with tomatoes was great practice for dealing with Nancy Pelosi and her crowd in Washington.

Saturday evening I was able to join many old friends at the 2009 Tennessee Republican Party Statesmens Dinner. 1,300 Tennessee Republicans came together to celebrate the values that make our party and America strong. The outpouring of support I received from so many people at the dinner is truly humbling. It was a pleasure to be back with so many of the great conservatives who stood on principle and delivered a great victory for Tennessee in 2008. Seeing good friends like Senator Dolores Gresham and Representative Terri Lynn Weaver, who fought the odds and won by standing by their convictions, reminds me of the great things we accomplished working together at the Tennessee Republican Party last year and the great things we can do in 2010.

Today I am announcing that Oscar Brock has joined our campaign as Treasurer. Oscar and his wife Meg are outstanding contributors to the Chattanooga community. Whether it is in business, politics or charitable work, Oscar’s character and integrity are always evident and are great examples of the tone I will take to Washington.

At every stop I make, two things are clear. Tennesseans are worried about the direction the Obama/Pelosi liberals are taking the country. We learned just this weekend that the Democrat Healthcare takeover plan will send our nation’s budget deficit to more than $1.6 trillion and keeps climbing past the year 2029.

Folks, that’s $1,600,000,000,000. We are past asking how much is too much. This out of control spending has to stop.

The other thing I hear is a desire for representatives who will say what they believe and stand by it. You can bet I intend to do just that. It means I will take a few extra shots from the liberals and the media but these times require conviction, not last minute conservative conversions.
