HIXSON, JULY 30 – Third Congressional District Candidate Robin Smith has joined an initiative launched by the Heritage Foundation that calls upon the Congress to reject the Obama Administration’s proposed cuts to defense programs and ballistic missile defense development.
Entitled “4% For Freedom,” the initiative seeks the support of the American people to urge Congress to maintain the defense budget at a minimum of 4% of the United States Gross Domestic Product, not including war funding. It also calls upon the Congress to fully equip our military personnel to complete their missions and to restore research and deployment funding for a national ballistic missile defense system.
“The President’s budget calls for the elimination of sixteen Ground Based Interceptor sites,” Smith said. “When we see reports from the U.S. Air Force that Iran could have missiles capable of reaching American soil by 2015 and have North Korea test firing long range missiles today, it is the height of irresponsibility to cut these programs to pay for more Obama/Pelosi social experiments and pork. We will soon be looking at a world where our way of life could be threatened in a matter of minutes. Defense of this nation is our first responsibility and intelligent use of our resources to protect the American people must be a priority.”
Smith has signed the petition at fourpercentforfreedom.com and encourages all Tennesseans to join her in this effort.
