HIXSON, JULY 13– Third District Congressional Candidate Robin Smith today joined a growing number of Americans calling for members of Congress to place themselves under the “Public Option” provisions of healthcare reform proposals if they are approved.
Reporting on a recent study, The Wall Street Journal has predicted that 119 million Americans will lose their private insurance under the proposed “Public Option” plan, but the proposal calls for an exemption for members of Congress.
Smith has signed the Public Option petition promoted by the Center for Healthcare Transformation. The petition supports a resolution introduced by Congressman John Fleming (R-LA) that expresses the sense of the House that members of Congress and Congressional staff be enrolled in a government-run plan if it is approved.
“It’s a well known fact that the Congressional insurance plan is the gold standard in America”, Smith said. “Under the current proposal, the Congress is again exempt from the laws they pass. Tennesseans are tired of the royalty in Congress passing laws, rules and regulations to run our lives while protecting their perks and privileges. If one size fits all government run healthcare is good enough for us, then it should be good enough for them.”
Smith encouraged Tennesseans to join her in signing the petition available at The Center's website and review the Fleming Resolution at the site for Congressman Fleming.
