Smith Endorses Plan to Stop Out-of-Control Spending
HIXSON, TN – Third District Congressional Candidate Robin Smith today endorsed the constitutional amendment proposed by Congressman Mike Pence of Indiana and Congressman Jeb Hensarling of Texas that would cap federal government spending at 1/5 (20%) of the nation’s gross domestic product. Under the proposed amendment, federal spending would be capped with provisions allowed for higher spending during a declaration of war by the United States or by 2/3 vote of the Congress. “Members in Congress have an addiction to spending.” Smith said. “It is clear without this Constitutional Amendment members of Congress will continue to support the “Favor Factory” approach to earmarks and continue to try to buy votes in elections by pandering to special interest groups.” Smith acknowledged the current climate in Washington will make passage of such an amendment unlikely and noted it demonstrates the need for members who will seriously address reform. “With the current liberal leadership of Congress, it will be difficult to advance an idea such as this, but I believe it is a good starting point to talk about the size and role of government. Until we address the way Washington does business and change the thinking that government should be the first answer to any problem, we will continue to see government grow and freedom shrink. I commend Congressmen Pence and Hensarling for taking action to drive the debate forward on this critical issue.” |
