Smith Denounces House Effort to Increase Debt Limit
HIXSON, DECEMBER 14 - Robin Smith, candidate for Congress in Tennessee’s Third District today criticized the proposal by House Democrats to raise the national debt ceiling by an additional $1.8 trillion, adding to the $12.1 trillion in current United States debt. “The fiscal irresponsibility of this congress and the president is staggering,” Smith said. “Following the failure of percolated ‘stimulus’ bill and their current drive to seize control of our health care system, it should come as no surprise that they would seek to throw our nation in a $14 trillion hole. While it is not surprising, it is disappointing that they think so little of the burden they are heaping on our children. I cannot remember a time where the public and the policy were so strikingly at odds. Americans are rightly asking where the jobs are and where is the improvement in our economy all this out of control spending was supposed to bring about? As Congress moves to drive our nation further into debt it's’s becoming clear that the liberal leaders at both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue are failing in their duties. Only by electing strong fiscal conservatives can we begin to reverse the damage done to our economy. Once in Congress, I will lead the fight to get control of federal spending and return sound policy to our budgeting process.” According to published reports, the House leadership intends to attach the measure raising the debt ceiling to the Defense Appropriations Bill. Smith responded to this move by stating, “To use the funding for our troops as cover to increase the debt is dishonest policy and disrespectful of the men and women we have fighting two wars. If the liberals in Congress want to put our economic future on the line, they should hold a stand-alone vote on this measure and get on the record. Tying it to legitimate funding and slipping it into a bill to avoid dealing with the issue during the 2010 year reveals their lack of courage and integrity.” |
